¡@¡@BANGKOK, Sept. 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Global efforts were needed to ban landmines,
state parties of the anti-mine Ottawa Convention appealed here Monday.
¡@¡@State parties of the convention should do everything to achieve the
convention's goals, including clearance of all their mined areas in 2009,
convention meeting official Jean Lint said at the opening.
¡@¡@At the same time, non-state parties were also encouraged to take part in
the common efforts, said Lint.
¡@¡@He noted that state parties had made great progress in past years in term
of universalization, stockpile destruction, mine clearance and victim
assistance.
¡@¡@However, in the most affected region Asia, only 40 percent countries were
party states of the convention, largely lagged behind the record of other
continents, noted Lint.
¡@¡@Mobilizing resources to achieve the convention's humanitarian aims was the
other major agenda of the meeting.
¡@¡@Describing resource mobilization the "fundamental element" to fulfill the
goals, officials called on all state and non-state parties to give priority to
the mine clearance and victims care.
¡@¡@Donation to the job was good investment for it freed life and land and
paved way for development, they said.
¡@¡@Over 600 delegates from the treaty's 136 state parties, and observers from
other non-signatory countries including China gathered for the five-day meeting.
¡@¡@It's the third time that China took part in the Ottawa Convention meeting
as an observer. Enditem
