NAY PYI TAW, March 1 (Xinhua) -- The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of China on Wednesday donated climate change-related household items worth over 2 million U.S. dollars to Myanmar to reduce firewood use.
The donation to Myanmar Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation comprises 10,500 biomass stoves, 5,250 pairs of household solar boards and other related materials under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2014.
Minister U Ohn Win said that the ministry will prioritize the distribution of those materials to the people in rural areas, especially central area of Myanmar to reduce the use of firewood and areas with electricity inaccessible.
The government is making efforts in cooperation with international organizations to reduce firewood consumption in rural areas as domestic demand for firewood reaches 18 cubic tons annually, he added.
