GARISSA, Kenya, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Unknown gunmen kidnapped three Kenyan teachers, one of whom later escaped, after storming Hagadera refugee camp early Thursday, Kenyan police said.

The police said three gunmen broke into a local private school at 1:30 a.m.. They initially kidnapped three, but one of them managed to escape.

Regional government official Mohamud Saleh ruled out Al-Shabaab's involvement in the incident and said four out of the six teachers had been accounted for.

"Our officers responded swiftly immediately the incident occurred and managed to rescue four teachers. One of the other teacher resurfaced hours later and is fine," he said.

"Only two teachers have not been accounted for. But we have intensified our operations and are optimistic of getting them back, there is no cause for alarm," Saleh said.

However, the police said only three teachers were found safe and a major security operation has been launched in the area that is near the Somali border to rescue the teachers.

Saleh said the officials were in contact with their counterparts from the Somalia National Army across the border to help in rescuing the two teachers.
