DILI, March 21 (Xinhua) -- An early vote count indicated that former guerrilla fighter Francisco "Lu-Olo" Guterres has won presidential election in Timor Leste.

The tally carried out by the nation's electoral commission showed that 62-year-old Guterres secured 57 percent of the total votes, higher than his closest rival, Education Minister Antonio de Conceincao who got only 33 percent.

With the single majority vote, a run-off is not necessary to be undertaken.

Guterres is supported by both Fretelin and CNRT Party led by the country's charismatic leader Xanana Gusmao.

Official results of the polls may be announced next week.

Eight candidates took parts in the presidential election on Monday, according to the commission.

Timor Leste formally got independence in 2002 after 24 years under Indonesian rule.
