HELSINKI, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Evgenia Medvedeva from Russia won the ladies short program by 79.01 points on Wednesday at the World Figure Skating Championships 2017 held here.

Canadians Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman ranked the second and third with 75.98 and 72.19 points respectively.

China's Li Xiangning was the 16th with 58.28 points, and Li Zijun placed the 20th with 56.30 points.

The tournament has been organized by the International Skating Union (ISU) annually since 1896, with the exception of the durations of the two World Wars from 1915 to 1921 and from 1940 to 1946.

The competitions this year are expected to be fierce, as the results will also decide the majority of quota places for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
