TBILISI, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The president of Georgia on Monday sent off the London-bound Georgian Olympic contingent, promising prizes for those who win medals at the upcoming Olympic Games.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili will attend the opening ceremony which falls on July 27 and he told the Georgian Olympians that their names would appear in the winners list of the Games which lasts till August 12.
Nino Salukvadze will captain the Georgian squad at the London Olympic Games by bearing the national colors of the South Caucasus country at the opening ceremony.
Nino Salukvadze is so far the one and only Georgian woman to have won an Olympic medal.
The motto for the London-bound Georgian squad is "It is much better in London than in Beijing".
The Georgians got 33 competition berths in 12 sports in the 2008 Games in Beijing and they have got 35 berths in 13 sports in London, according to the Georgian National Olympic Committee.
The Georgians are known for their wrestling insight and techniques, as out of the 18 medals won so far from the Olympics, half were from wrestling, be it the Greco-Roman style or freestyle. The Georgians also captured five medals from the judo discipline.
Georgia started to compete in the Olympic Games as an independent state in 1994 and so far also won four medals from boxing, shooting and weightlifting.
Local pundits and fans expect medals from the Georgian judokas and wrestlers in London. They say that other competitors had better not slight the Georgians who are born wrestlers and judokas.
