LOS ANGELES, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Paramount Pictures' family film "Sonic the Hedgehog" dominated the North American box office with 57 million U.S. dollars in its debut weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, the movie is expected to earn 68 million dollars in domestic market and 111 million dollars globally through Monday, the Presidents' Day holiday. It has set a record for a video game adaptation.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" follows the world's fastest hedgehog teaming up with his new best friend Tom Wachowski to defend the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik.

Opening at 4,167 theaters, the film received an A CinemaScore from audiences and generated a 63 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Warner Bros.' superhero film "Birds of Prey" fell to second place on box office chart in its second weekend with 17.1 million dollars. The film tumbled 48 percent, a steep drop for a holiday weekend.

Based on DC Comics characters Harley Quinn and famous comic book team Birds of Prey, "Birds of Prey" is the 8th film in the DC Extended Universe and a follow-up to 2016's superhero film "Suicide Squad." The film follows a fictional female character Harley Quinn who joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

Sony Pictures' thriller "Fantasy Island," a horror reimagining of the classic television series of the same name, opened in third place with 12.4 million dollars. The movie has scared up 7.6 million dollars from foreign markets.

A number of movies opened alongside "Sonic the Hedgehog" this weekend, including Universal's romance drama "The Photograph," and Searchlight Pictures' remake "Downhill."

"The Photograph" followed in fourth place with a three day opening of 12.3 million dollars.

Rounding out the top five is Sony's action comedy "Bad Boys For Life," which collected 11.3 million dollars in its fifth weekend.

"Bad Boys for Life" is the third installment in the hugely successful Bad Boys franchise, the sequel to "Bad Boys 2" and 1995's "Bad Boys." Directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the film stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in their roles as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett as they are back together for one last ride.
