KABUL, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen zero energy cold storages for up to 200 tons of agricultural products have recently been built in Afghanistan's central Bamyan province, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said Tuesday.

The cold storages, worth 7.6 million afghanis (100,000 U.S. dollars), were funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and built under the Horticulture Value Chain Development Sector Project (HVCDSP) of the ministry, the ministry said in a statement.

The storages were built in the provincial capital Bamyan city and neighboring Kahmard district, with the capacity of keeping up to 200 tons of onions and potatoes, said the statement.

Designed with high standards, the environment-friendly storages do not need electrical and mechanical energy for functioning. They work on the principle of evaporative cooling, according to the statement.

"The HVCDSP is planned to design 139 refrigeration storage in Bamyan, of which 16 completed and utilized by the potato and onion growing local farmers in the rich agriculture province," the statement said.

The province, about 200 km west of Kabul, is famous for its potatoes, onions and fruit.

More than 3,000 cold storages are operational across the country and more cold storage facilities would be constructed, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock.
