MAPUTO, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced Wednesday that the government will "tighten inspection and accountability" of the coronavirus prevention measures, to make sure those measures are properly observed and prevent the collapse of the national health system.
The president made the statement during the launch of a renewable energy initiative in Maputo, where he admitted that the hospitals' capacity in the city is under great pressure due to the surging infections.
"The bed occupancy rate in hospitals in the city of Maputo has tripled in the last three weeks, with all intensive care beds being occupied," he said.
The president said the preventive measures against COVID-19 that were introduced since March have not been properly followed, and the country cannot have 300 people infected per day as it may not have the capacity to treat them.
"The worsening of the situation may cause the national health system to collapse. We are doing everything so that it does not happen," he said.
The Minister of the Interior will communicate which specific tightening measures will be taken, "above all in the inspection aspect," said Nyusi.
As of Tuesday, Mozambique has reported 8,556 COVID-19 cases, including 5,205 recoveries and 59 deaths. Enditem
