CHENGDU, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Fujian labored to a 64-60 victory over Wuhan and tasted its first win of the new Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) season, with Wuhan recording its fourth straight loss here on Saturday.

It was a finely balanced game with two teams consistently within five points of each other. Both sides traded the lead 11 times until the final minute of play.

Peng Huaqian's three-pointer whittled away Fujian's lead to two points with 26 seconds on the clock. Fujian guard Wei Yu-chun converted one of two free throws on the ensuing possession, but Deng Ruijie had a layup blocked by Wang Qiuyi, thus ruining Wuhan's chance of a comeback.

Wang pocketed a game-high 20 points for Fujian, who also got help from Wei's 19 and Sun Mengzhu's 13.

"As a young team, we haven't played many tough games like this, so we cherish it a lot," Sun noted.

Fujian coach Gong Songlin emphasized the role defense played in his side's victory.

"Defense is quite vital in such an intense game," he noted.

Wang scored 11 straight points as Fujian ended a defense-driven first quarter 19-16 ahead of Wuhan, whose substitute Deng stepped up to nail seven points in a row.

The second quarter was contested more fiercely, with many body contacts and fouls. Fujian managed a three-point advantage at half-time.

Wuhan began to find its shooting range back from the locker room, turning inferior position into a 51-50 lead heading into the final quarter.

Peng led Wuhan with 17 points, and Ha Wenxi and Deng bagged 13 and 11 points respectively.

"We are not a strong side. After playing such an intense game, we can improve in mentality and carrying out tactics," Wuhan coach Li Xin commented. Enditem
