NEW DELHI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed and his colleague wounded in an accidental firing incident at their place of posting in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday evening when the duo was cleaning their service weapon at the bungalow of a former lawmaker in the Civil Lines area of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

"As per information gathered from the spot, a bullet was accidentally fired from a pistol during the cleaning process. It hit the palm of one policeman and later pierced into the chest of his colleague," a policeman said.

Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation.

On Wednesday night a policeman was killed and another wounded while they were out on an anti-Naxal operation in Barsur of Dantewada district, about 334 km south of Raipur.

Reports suggest it was a case of mistaken identity.

However, the police did not mention in its statement on the incident whose weapon accidentally went off and said more details would be shared later.

Currently, Naxals are active across the central and eastern parts of India. The insurgency reportedly has claimed hundreds of lives besides rendering thousands of poor inhabitants homeless.
