HARARE, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Thursday lauded the Chinese government for its constant support and solidarity with Zimbabwe.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Zimbabwe. Mnangagwa said China has been continuously standing with Zimbabwe during its times of need and especially on international forums.

"We continue to enjoy the support of the People's Republic of China at all international forums where the subject of Zimbabwe is discussed," Mnangagwa said during a virtual meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Guo Shaochun.

"You have stood by us at the forums and we are grateful for that brotherly solidarity and support which you have given us and we shall also continue to support the thrust and non-interference policy of the People's Republic of China whether it be on our continent or internationally," he added.

Mnangagwa said China has continued to give support to various fields of the Zimbabwean economy including health, power, airports, education and agriculture.

The president said Zimbabwe supports China's stance on multilateralism against the pursuit of narrow interests by some big powers.

China is also among the top countries that have made various donations to Zimbabwe in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

"Most importantly when we had nothing, we felt China was indeed a great friend because you came to our rescue at a time when we were most exposed through lack of equipment," Mnangagwa said.

He said Zimbabwe has gradually re-opened its economy which had been shut down for the past six months to minimize the spread of the pandemic.

For his part, Guo thanked Zimbabwe for its support to China's fight against the pandemic.

He said China will ensure that if the research and development of the COVID-19 vaccine is successful, it would be accessible and affordable to developing countries such as Zimbabwe.

During the virtual meeting, the Chinese ambassador donated 120 computers, which will be distributed to schools around the country. Enditem
