LAGOS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- A group of United States military specialists has
arrived in Liberia to assess possible efforts to bring stability to the war-torn
west African country, according to a report reaching here from the Liberian
capital Monrovia on Monday.
The members of
the military expert team wearing helmets and flak jackets
left the Monrovia's airport by helicopter and arrived in the heavily-armed U.S.
embassy compound in the capital.
The report quoted an officer of the U.S. military command in Europe as
saying that the team comprised between 10 and 15 military experts and another 10
to 15 soldiers drawn from postings in Germany and other parts of Europe.
U.S. President George W. Bush ordered last Friday to send the military
experts' group to Liberia, though Washington has not committed to sending a
peacekeeping force to the west African country.
Liberian President Charles Taylor on Sunday agreed to step down, saying
that he had agreed in principle to leave the country and go into exile in
Nigeria.
He said the arrival of a U.S.-led military force to oversee an orderly
transfer of power was "crucial in every way" and a precondition for his
voluntary exile. End
