"Angel Has Fallen" wins North American box office for second-straight weekend

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- Lionsgate and Millennium's "Angel Has Fallen" easily maintained its reign in North America, adding 11.57 million U.S. dollars during its second weekend of release.

The action film is on track to close out the Labor Day holiday with an estimated 14.5 million dollars through Monday. It has grossed a total of 40.7 million dollars in North America through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

"Angel Has Fallen" is the third chapter in the Fallen film series, following 2013's "Olympus Has Fallen" and 2016's "London Has Fallen." Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman in the lead roles, the film follows a U.S. Secret Service Agent who is wrongfully accused for the attempted assassination of the President and must evade his own agency and the FBI to uncover the truth.

Universal's comedy film "Good Boys" came in second with 9.19 million dollars in its third weekend, pushing its North American total to 56.2 million dollars through Sunday. Directed by Gene Stupnitsky and starring Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon and Keith L. Williams, the film tells the story of three sixth grade boys who ditch school and embark on an epic journey.

In third place, Disney's "The Lion King" brought in 6.7 million dollars for a North American total of 521 million dollars. Directed by Jon Favreau, it is a photo-realistic remake of Disney's 1994 animated film of the same name.

Universal's action film "Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw" landed in fourth in its fifth weekend with 6.28 million dollars for a North American cume of 157.1 million dollars. Directed by David Leitch, the film is a spin-off of "The Fast and the Furious" franchise. Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham form an unlikely alliance in the battle against a terrorist organization threatening the world with a deadly virus.

Sony's Christian drama film "Overcomer" finished fifth with 5.7 million dollars in its second weekend for a North American total of 17.2 million dollars. Directed by and starring Alex Kendrick, the film tells the story of a high-school basketball coach volunteers to coach a troubled teen in long-distance running.
